Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by compromised bone strength predisposing to an increased risk of fracture. Bone strength reflects the integration of two main features: bone density and bone quality Osteoporosis is an insidious disease associated with a low bone mass, which leads to fractures, pain and loss of function.
Worldwide, osteoporosis affects one in three women and one in five men over the age of fifty. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, once a woman reaches 60 years of age, she has a one in four chance of breaking a bone as a result of osteoporosis. In the United States alone, osteoporosis accounts for more than 1.5 million fractures annually. It is currently one of the most under-diagnosed and under-treated disorders in medicine. Prevention, early diagnosis and effective treatment are critical for this disorder.
